The French paper industry is sinking into the crisis. While the bad conditions had resulted in a decrease of 4 of consumption in 2008, the situation got worse year last with a drop of 11, according to the figures given yesterday by the Confederation of industry of paper, cardboard and cellulose (Copacel). "After a sharp break in the first half, apparent consumption has stabilised and began edging up end of the year", details Gérard Bontemps, the President of the Copacel.
The reasons for the slump A removal important customers, combined with the weakness of the markets. The notable exception of the tissue paper and other hygiene products, growing by 2 due to the influenza A (H1N1)-related government recommendations, all sectors fell. The greatest decrease amounts to printing and writing papers directly correlated to the situation, who saw consumption fall by more than 16. "The decision of the economic activity caused a collapse of advertising expenditures, and a reduction of the edition of invoices and documents of communication in enterprises", deplored the Copacel.

Press papers have not been spared and have suffered reduction of advertising space, paging, and the rise of electronic dissemination. As the recovery expected in the fall in sales catalogues by mail was not held.
Average European
To this request in Bern, the offer had to adapt and spring production fell by 12 to 8.3 million tonnes. Comfort, the France is not an isolated case. "We are in the average of European countries, which showed a decline of 11.7," says Jean-Paul Franiatte, Delegate General of the Copacel, while observing that the German production remains very superior to that of the Hexagon, favoured by the Eastern European regions.
The pulp and paper sector has paid the heaviest price to this decline, with a drop of 26 to 1.7 million tonnes. Production units were also closed in France last year, as the unit of pulp paper in addition to 300,000 tons of M-Real Alizay group, near Rouen, year-end.
The total number of closed sites is however lower than that of 2008, since 3 plants were arrested, representing a capacity of 200,000 tonnes, 6 in the previous year (600,000 tonnes). This decrease in the volumes be added a decline of about 8.5 of the selling price of the year, resulting in a degradation of the turnover estimated at 20, compared to 5.9 billion euros in 2008. The sector suffered more that production costs are reassembled in the second half, with the increase in prices of energy (electricity and gas) and basic chemicals.
And professionals in the sector see little improvement for the fiscal year that starts. According to the Copacel business paper (16,000 people in France) approach the year 2010 with "a major risk of effect of scissors, in which an increase in the cost of factors of production, not reflected in the selling prices, would lead to fragi liser profitability". The scenario of a soft growth of 1.4 of GDP, should result in a slight increase in the consumption of paper and paperboard in the hexagon in 2010. With the risk of a new resizing of the industrial tool.
